Community

When the work is good but hard—and teaching often is—community is what sustains you. We’re not meant to do life alone. Whether you’re coming straight out of college or making a mid-career shift into education, there’s something powerful about walking alongside people who really get it. At MTR, your residency cohort becomes more than classmates. They become your friends, your support system, your people. It's a built-in network of professionals figuring things out together in a city that may (or may not!) be brand new.

We create intentional spaces for connection, from residency-specific gatherings to “MTR Family” events that bring together residents, graduates, alums, spouses, and staff. You’ll also be placed in a strategic partner school with other MTR teachers nearby, so from Day 1 in the classroom, you’ve already got someone down the hall who understands the highs, the lows, and everything in between. You won’t have to search for community, it’s already here and ready for you.

Some events that you’ll get to attend when you join MTR:

  • Back to School Bash*

  • Fall Ball

  • Intramural Sports Leagues*

  • Night at the Redbirds

  • Prayer Nights*

  • Resident Christmas Party

  • Resident Retreats (Summer, Fall, Spring)

  • Trivia Nights*

  • Victory Party (Graduation)

*all MTR Family is invited & attends

Housing

During your residency year, all single and married residents are required* to live in MTR-arranged housing at the Parcels at Crosstown Concourse, free of charge to you. MTR offices are on the third floor of Crosstown Concourse, meaning that you get to live just a few floors above where you’ll be taking graduate courses — easy commute!

*unless you have been approved to live off-campus

Memphis

Memphis is a city that may surprise you. It’s gritty and soulful. It pulls you in. People here show up for each other. Whether you’re on your porch, at the park, or standing in line at your favorite coffee shop, don’t be surprised if someone strikes up a conversation. For a young professional, it’s a place where you can grow roots and afford to live while figuring out who you want to be. There's a strong community of creatives, educators, and entrepreneurs doing meaningful work without needing to shout about it. Memphis is real, it’s full of history, and there’s space here to breathe, connect, build community, and enjoy life. We’d love to have you join.

Hundreds of MTR teachers who moved here to do the residency have stayed. If you love Memphis, it will love you back!
