Praxis Subject Assessments

The Praxis Subject Assessment tests are a measure of content knowledge for teachers in Tennessee and other states.  It does not assess understanding of pedagogical practices—it only assesses the content knowledge necessary to be ready to teach a grade level or subject.  While some education programs can be started before passing the Praxis Subject Assessment test, Memphis Teacher Residency requires that all residents pass the appropriate test for their content area prior to beginning the residency.

A Praxis Subject Assessment test score is not required to submit an application, and you do not have to be an education major to subject an application. If you happen to have taken and passed the appropriate Praxis test prior to submitting your application, you will be asked to self-report your score on the application. As a passing score does strengthen an application somewhat, you are encouraged to email your score to the Recruiting Director if you take the appropriate Praxis test and receive a passing score after you apply but before being accepted to the program.

To begin as a resident, only the Subject Assessment test for your grade/discipline needs to be passed. If you’ve obtained a 3.0 cumulative GPA, no other Praxis tests are required prior to becoming a resident. The Core Praxis tests are also required for applicants with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.99 or below.

Official Praxis Subject Assessment score reports must be sent to the following two institutions:

  • Christian Brothers University (code 1121)
  • TN Department of Education (code 8190).

Applicants who pass the Praxis will be required to forward a copy of the official student score report to MTR after receiving an invitation to join the program. Applicants should keep their original official score reports for future reference.

To register, go to the ETS Praxis Registration page.
