Lucero's Journey: Embracing Hispanic Representation in Education

Meet Lucero Amador,
Class of 2024

Here in Memphis, Lucero embarked on a mission that intertwined her personal history with her professional aspirations. Her journey to teaching began in childhood, with a yearning for representation, for a role model she didn't have.

Arriving in Memphis five years ago, Lucero, who is originally from Mexico and now has family in Georgia, fell in love with the city while attending Christian Brothers University. Ever since her senior year of high school, Lucero was driven by a longing to support Spanish-speaking students who, like her, did not have the support they needed in school. One impactful year with her third grade teacher, though, inspired her to be a light for future students. She joined MTR after graduating from CBU and is now living out her high school dream as she trains to become a light to her current students.

Memphis, with its vibrant cultures and a profound sense of community, embraced Lucero. She continued to feel embraced through MTR’s intentional community building, graduate courses and the guidance of coaches and professors like Keidra Boaze (MTR Staff). Lucero developed tools for teaching and a deeper understanding of her purpose. MTR didn't just equip her with resources; it reinforced her resolve to make a lasting impact.

The most rewarding aspect of her MTR experience hasn’t been confined to the classroom. Lucero is reaching students by bridging gaps with families, a bond extending beyond school walls. Her ability to communicate with Spanish-speaking families resonates deeply with her. She is offering what she yearned for in her own upbringing.

“I really feel like I am healing my inner child by being able to provide what I didn’t have growing up,” she reflects.

Lucero's journey with MTR isn't just about teaching—it's about healing. It's about embracing her childhood needs and becoming the role she longed for. Her story reveals the heart and soul of MTR—a commitment to restoring education and communities, one teacher, one student at a time.
