Rebekah’s Story: Finding friends and love through teaching

Meet Rebekah carroll,
Class of 2020

Rebekah met some of her dearest friends through teaching with MTR - she even met her now husband at her school! Get to know Rebekah and how the relationships she formed through MTR have changed her life.

Rebekah Carroll studied education in college and always knew she wanted to be a teacher. She wasn’t fully ready to have her own classroom post-undergrad, so she moved to Memphis almost 5 years ago to join MTR. After teaching kindergarten for several years, she has now jumped to teaching 5th grade math. While that transition can be tough, she reflects on the invaluable coaching and help she gets from her school leaders -- specifically Rhoda Smith, (MTR Class of 2016).

MTR teachers and leaders have come alongside Rebekah, both in her job and her personal life. As a resident, she was deeply encouraged in her professional skills by Erin Johnson (MTR Class of 2011 and then Residency Director). Now, Erin is Rebekah's friend and Bible study leader.

“Erin’s advice and faith have been a huge help to me both personally and professionally. I owe her a lot.”

Speaking of her personal growth in Memphis, Rebekah actually met her husband while teaching during her residency year. Now, they both teach in different schools but still support each other's work and believe it was fully God’s plan that she moved to Memphis in 2019!

Being a part of MTR has brought Rebekah so much joy because of the support and friendship it offers; it feels like a big, close family to her. Even through the pandemic, she recognizes how MTR has stayed true to the mission of providing high quality education to all students. It is refreshing to her to have so many teachers in the “big family” of MTR who believe the same thing.

In Memphis and through MTR, Rebekah found not just a job, but a family, friends, mentors and love. “I deeply believe in MTR’s mission, and am so proud to be a part of it.”
